SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a payment integration initiative that harmonizes euro payments across 41 European countries and territories. The exact execution time, availability and fee still depend on the payment scheme, your payment service provider (PSP), your account and the law that applies to the transaction.

SEPA is an EU initiative. The European Payments Council (EPC) develops and maintains the main SEPA payment schemes. The geographical scope includes the 27 EU Member States, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra, Vatican City State/Holy See, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Moldova and Serbia. Not every PSP offers every SEPA instrument in every country, and being in the geographical scope does not mean that a payment is instant or free.

Three SEPA Payment Instruments

1. SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT)

The standard euro bank transfer: you provide the recipient's IBAN, your PSP debits your account and the payment is routed through the SEPA clearing system. Under the applicable rules, execution generally takes no more than one banking business day after processing starts; cut-off times, weekends and bank holidays can affect when that period begins. Fees depend on your PSP and account, subject to applicable price-equality rules.

2. SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst)

SCT Inst is designed to make euro credit transfers available within a maximum of 10 seconds, 24/7/365, when the sending and receiving PSPs support the scheme and the transaction passes their checks and limits. Regulation (EU) 2024/886 introduced phased obligations for PSPs, but availability still depends on the provider, jurisdiction, currency and applicable implementation deadline.

3. SEPA Direct Debit (SDD)

Works in reverse — the recipient pulls money from your account with your authorization. Two types: Core for consumers (subscriptions, utilities) and B2B for business payments.

SEPA vs SWIFT

SEPA SWIFT
Currency EUR only Many currencies, depending on the payment route
Geographical scope 41 European countries and territories Global financial messaging network
Speed Standard SCT or SCT Inst, depending on the scheme and PSP Varies by currency, route and PSP
Cost Depends on the PSP, account and applicable law Depends on the route, intermediaries, currency and PSP

Use SEPA when sending euros within the SEPA zone. For other currencies or countries outside SEPA, you may need another payment rail, such as SWIFT.

SEPA Runs on IBANs

For SEPA euro credit transfers and direct debits within the scope of the relevant schemes, the IBAN-only rule has applied since 2016: the IBAN is generally sufficient and the payer is not normally asked to provide the BIC. This does not make every payment scenario identical; scheme scope, PSP systems and non-EEA or non-SEPA routes can require additional information. The IBAN format varies by country:

  • Germany — 22 characters: DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00
  • Spain — 24 characters: ES91 2100 0418 4502 0005 1332
  • France — 27 characters: FR76 3000 6000 0112 3456 7890 189

Price Equality & Transfer Times

For euro payments covered by the applicable EU rules, a cross-border payment cannot be charged more than the equivalent domestic payment. The actual domestic price can still differ between PSPs, account plans and payment channels:

  • Standard SCT: execution is generally within one banking business day after processing starts, subject to cut-off times, weekends and bank holidays
  • SEPA Instant: maximum 10 seconds under the SCT Inst scheme, available 24/7/365 when both PSPs support it
  • Instant-payment pricing: under the EU Instant Payments Regulation, a PSP cannot charge more for an instant euro credit transfer than for the corresponding regular credit transfer; availability and the underlying regular-transfer price still depend on the PSP, account and applicable law

For Businesses & Developers

SEPA payments use the ISO 20022 messaging standard (XML-based):

  • pain.001 — credit transfer initiation
  • pain.002 — payment status reports
  • pain.008 — direct debit initiation
  • camt.053 — account statements

For testing SEPA integration, use our Random IBAN Generator to create valid-format IBANs with correct check digits for supported SEPA countries. RandomIBAN generates synthetic values for format and checksum testing. It does not issue bank accounts, verify account ownership, route payments or create live payment-provider credentials.

Common SEPA Errors

  • "Invalid IBAN" — failed MOD-97 validation (typo or wrong format). Use an IBAN validator to verify.
  • "IBAN Country Not Supported" — the country or format is not supported by the selected payment route. Ask your PSP which rail and beneficiary details to use; do not assume that every non-SEPA route must use SWIFT.
  • "Beneficiary Bank Not Reachable" — receiving bank not reachable through SEPA clearing.
  • "Insufficient Funds" — the payer's account cannot cover the payment and any applicable charges. Because an instant payment can complete within seconds, verify the recipient details before confirming.

Current SEPA Developments

  • Instant Payments Regulation — Regulation (EU) 2024/886 introduced phased obligations for euro instant payments, including requirements related to receiving, sending and pricing. Check the Commission's current guidance for the deadline that applies to your PSP.
  • SEPA scheme rulebooks — the EPC publishes the rules and implementation guidance for SCT, SCT Inst and SDD. Providers can add their own product, risk and service conditions within the applicable framework.
